Abbott’s Government's $7.75 Million GP Tax Hit On Local Families

Local families will be among the hardest hit by Tony Abbott’s new GP Tax, new Medicare analysis has shown, said Federal Labor Member for Watson Tony Burke today.

In an unprecedented attack on Medicare, the Abbott Government plans to put a tax on every visit you make to your doctor – an upfront fee of $6.

Currently, 97.80% of GP services in our local area are bulk billed. Families in the Watson electorate are forecasted to fork out over $7 million every year for visits to their local doctor if the Prime Minister presses ahead with his GP Tax.

The fundamental principle behind Medicare is that everyone is entitled to access the healthcare you need, not just the healthcare you can afford.

“Mr Abbott promised no new taxes before the election but now he’s doing the exact opposite by planning to put a tax on every visit you make to your doctor.” Mr Burke said.

“Families who are already struggling to make ends meet cannot afford to pay to take their sick child or elderly parent to the doctor,” said Mr Burke.

“Make no mistake, the Prime Minister’s GP Tax will hit families who can least afford it,” Mr Burke said.

“That is why I will continue to fight any attempt by this government to wreck Medicare and dismantle universal healthcare in Australia.

“I have sent out a petition in the mail asking the Abbott Government to stop undermining Medicare and abandon its plan to tax visits to the doctor.

“Please, sign this petition and mail it back to my office. You can also sign the petition online at We need to fight this together.” Mr Burke said.
