Campaigning in Western Australia, Tony Abbott has flagged breaking a key election promise to the Australian people by putting cuts to education, pensions, the ABC and SBS back on the table after ruling them out before the election.
During a doorstop interview yesterday, Mr Abbott said:
“Apart from Defence, health and medical research was the only area of government funding which was quarantined from savings pre-election.”

Yet pre-election Mr Abbott promised:
“No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS.”

Shadow Finance Minister Tony Burke said the Prime Minister was attempting to rewrite history and lay the groundwork for cuts in this Commission of Audit report.
“Mr Abbott has let slip his plans to break his election promise not to make cuts to education, pensions, the ABC or SBS - he must stop the secrecy and come clean about what cuts he has planned before the election in Western Australia,” Mr Burke said.
“There can only be one reason that Mr Abbott wants to re-write his election promises and keep his plans secret. The cuts he has planned will hurt. He knows it and he doesn’t want the people of Western Australia to know it until after they’ve voted.
“How can Mr Abbott expect the voters of Western Australia to walk into their voting booths without knowing exactly what nasty surprises he has planned – he’s already cutting hundreds of millions of dollars from urban rail infrastructure in WA, what’s next?
“This is yet another example of the Government promising one thing before the election and doing the exact opposite after.
“This is a Government addicted to secrecy. Mr Abbott must release his Commission of Cuts report publicly and end his deceit of the people of Western Australia.”
