Member for Watson Tony Burke today announced funding to build a new social and community room called “The Base” at the Australian National Sports Club in Lakemba.
The Base will provide locals with a room designed to provide a friendly, accessible space for sports and recreational activities we well as social gatherings.
Mr Burke said today’s announcement builds on the important contributions already being made by the Australian National Sports Club in the local area.
“The Australian National Sports Club is a great place to play sport, but it’s so much more than that,” Mr Burke said.
“The club also hosts social gatherings and learning opportunities, it is a community hub that makes an important contribution to bringing people together and improving community participation.
“The Base will make an excellent addition to this wonderful facility,” Mr Burke said.
Club Duty Manager, Belal Pickering, said The Base would be utilised for workshops and training sessions to build the skills, capacity and knowledge of all users in the local area.
“The Base complements the sporting and fitness activities proudly offered by the Club since 1975,” Mr Pickering said.
The Australian National Sports Club opens its doors to over 1,200 people every week, with badminton, basketball, soccer and volleyball amongst the most popular sports.
The Watson Stronger Communities Programme provides grants of between $5,000 and $20,000 to local not-for-profit community groups for small capital projects.
