Federal Labor Member for Watson, Tony Burke has criticised the Abbott Government over its announcement to close Medicare offices on Saturdays.
“Medicare in Roselands and Burwood will no longer open on Saturday’s effective from 22 March”. Mr Burke said.
“People who are unable to get to a Medicare office during the week were able to go on Saturday mornings and access face-to-face support to process their claims”.
“Opening on a Saturday meant just a little bit more flexibility for people. This won’t be happening anymore.” Mr Burke said.
This is a direct contradiction to what Tony Abbott said in 2004 as Health Minister, when he announced Saturday opening hours at 114 Medicare offices in metropolitan areas and major regional centres:
"If you're going to deliver the best possible service you've got to have longer opening hours."
TONY ABBOTT - THE AGE 9 JULY 2004
“In only six months of Government Tony Abbott and the Coalition’s record for the local area include funding cuts for security cameras and other safety measures in Bankstown and Campsie, funding cuts for our multicultural groups and now cutting Medicare services on a Saturday.”
