Celebrating 100 Years of ANZAC

Federal Member for Watson, Tony Burke MP has convened the first meeting for the Watson ANZAC Centenary Local Grants Committee.

 

In 2015 Australia will celebrate the Centenary of ANZAC. $125,000 has been made available for local community projects to commemorate this historically important period in Australian History.

The Advisory Committee members are:

Tony Stewart (Chair) – Former Member for Bankstown
Kayee Griffin – Former Mayor of Canterbury and Former NSW MLC
Andrew Smithwick – Bankstown Council
Janelle McIntosh – Special Projects Co-ordinator, Canterbury Council
Ann Garland OAM – President, Lakemba RSL Sub Branch
Gary Tomkins – President, Belfield RSL Sub Branch
Alex Pirie – President, Burwood RSL Sub Branch
Jack Scott – Secretary, Campsie RSL Sub Branch
Nigel Parbury – Canterbury and District Historical Society

In its first meeting the committee has examined broadly, strategies to best use this funding to commemorate the importance of the event and create lasting legacies of ANZAC in our community.

“I’m very grateful that these great local leaders have agreed to be on this committee, to guide us on the way that our community commemorates such an important part of Australia’s history.” Mr Burke said.

“A disproportionately large number of young men from our part of Sydney volunteered and lost their lives in the First World War.

“All the committee members have a level of expertise and authenticity in this area to decide on the best way to honour their sacrifice.” Mr Burke said.

Tony Stewart, Former Member for Bankstown will Chair the committee. Mr Stewart was the Premier’s Representative of the ANZAC Memorial Trust for seven years.

Mr Stewart added that he was very pleased and honoured to have been invited to be Chair of the committee.

“We are now focused on delivering a lasting community legacy that commemorates the ANZAC centenary for our great local area.” Said Mr Stewart.

The next meeting will be held early next year.
